An Example of Great Socratic Teaching An Invitation to Socratic Dialogue and Learning: Becoming an Artisan of Thought For learning and scholarship to thrive, academic communities cannot tolerate acts of academic dishonesty, such as cheating, misrepresentation, or plagiarism.
According to the Center for Academic Integrity there are five fundamental values that characterize an academic community of integrity: Honesty: The quest for truth and knowledge requires intellectual and personal honesty in learning, teaching, research and service. Trust: Academic institutions must foster a climate of mutual trust in order to stimulate the free exchange of ideas. Fairness: All interactions among students, faculty and administrators should be grounded in clear standards, practices and procedures. Respect: Learning is acknowledged as a participatory process, and a wide range of opinions and ideas is respected. Responsibility: A thriving community demands personal accountability on the part of all members and depends upon action in the face of wrongdoing. Acts of academic dishonesty compromise these core values and undermine the process by which knowledge is created, shared and evaluated. Repeated offenses cast suspicion not only upon the integrity of individuals, but also damage the reputation of the larger academic community. -- Empire State College The Fundamental Values of Academic Integrity (13 page booklet from the Center for Academic Integrity - pdf file) “The life of man requires to be regulated by the virtues with regard to everything.”

To kick off the workshop, we want to introduce you to this successful method and all of its benefits. The free Structure and Style Overview is for all parents and teachers and is highly recommended for parents with students enrolled in English classes at SFA. In this 2 hour and 20 minute DVD and accompanying handouts, Andrew Pudewa introduces you to the Teaching Writing: Structure and Style method of teaching writing. Briefly covering the nine units of structure and introducing several stylistic techniques, Andrew gives the audience insight into why this method is so effective in teaching even the most reluctant writer. Registration is required in order to attend -- we must have a head count prior to the start of the workshop! The free overview will be shown on Monday, September 19th, from 2:00 to 4:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served. To register, email Mrs. Noonan by Monday, September 12th. The full TWSS workshop will be given in three parts, with each weekly meeting scheduled for four hours to allow for breaks, and will begin on Monday, September 26th at 10:00 a.m. This ten-hour seminar for the teacher instructs you in how to effectively and enjoyably teach your students to write. The seminar is presented on 6 DVDs. We will be showing two DVDs at each meeting. The Seminar Workbook provides added information on teaching writing to multiple grades as well as suggested lesson plans. Registration for SFA English teachers is free and the workshop is required for all SFA writing instructors whether first time or as a refresher course. Parent-teachers affiliated with Sancta Familia Academy pay a $35 registration fee to cover the cost of materials. The registration fee for non-SFA homeschooling parents is $85 and includes the Seminar Workbook. For an additional $10, you can take home a copy of Tips & Tricks for Teaching through the Nine Units, a two hour supplemental dvd. (Pre-order required!) The registration deadline is September 12th in order to allow time to order materials. To register email Mrs. Noonan with your intention to attend and let us know if you want a copy of the Tips & Tricks DVD to take home. Be sure to specify whether you will be attending the overview only or the full workshop (all four weeks). Payment for the full workshop is due by September 19th |
